Valerie’s Presentation

It was late so I took an Uber back to my apartment. It was pricey but I didn’t want to deal with going in the subway at that time. The dinner with the Costeaus took longer than I had thought. I was floored when I saw Jules walk in Emillie’s apartment. I never thought he was the son of one of our biggest prospective clients. Even more reason, I can’t mess this up. There was an added complication of me sleeping with the son and Duncan being back in my life.

Jules is an amazing guy. And if Duncan hadn’t come knocking back at my door and also if it wasn’t for the fact that he’s the son possibly of one of McDougan’s biggest clients to date, I would totally date Jules. But this new development just complicates everything. When I arrived at my apartment, Duncan was already in bed. He woke up when I came in.

“Hey Babe, sorry I’m late,” I apologized.

“It’s okay Angel. So, how was your business meeting? Did you think you got the client to sign up?” he said sleepily.

That’s what I loved about Duncan, he remembered everything I told him and he’s genuinely interested in my career advancement.

“I don’t know yet. It seems she liked me and she kept talking about signing up with my publishing company.”

“That’s good. I’m going back to bed now. Come join me.”

“In a while. I need to freshen up.”

I brushed my teeth and changed into my nightgown. I went to my side of the bed and lay down next to Duncan where he cuddled me. I could feel his warm breath on my neck and closed my eyes. It took me a while to fall asleep. I was bothered by the complicated tangled web I’ve built. There was only one solution and it was obvious. I had to let go of Jules but I owed him an explanation. I think just ghosting him was a bad idea. I will certainly be bumping into him a lot if his mother is going to be my client. I wanted to end things the right way. After what seemed like almost thirty minutes, I fell asleep next to Duncan. His warm body and his scent was familiar to me.

The week flew by fast and already it was hump day. It was about 10 AM in the office, when I saw a familiar face approach McDougan’s office. It was Emillie Costeau. She had mentioned she wanted to talk to the main guy but she told me she would coordinate through her secretary. Apparently, she got hold of the main man himself. I didn’t know she was coming, no one told me so I just went back to my cubicle. I mean, I could have greeted her but I chose not to. The business talk was between her and McDougan now.

McDougan was an accessible boss. In some companies, it’s hard to get a hold of the top guy but McDougan, although the eccentric that he is, is a very approachable guy.
